Câr-y-Môr announces environmental partnership with 1% for the Planet
Regenerative by nature, Câr-y-Môr is committed to leaving things better than we found them.
That’s why we’re over the moon to announce we have joined 1% for the Planet as an environmental partner.
This partnership is intended to advance our own impact, as well as involve more businesses to join the environmental movement.
1% for the Planet is an accountability partner for businesses ready to reject “business as usual” and give back to environmental partners making a difference around the globe.
Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, their members have given $728m to 7,265 environmental partners to date.
“At Câr-y-Môr we embrace our responsibility as guardians of the land and sea,” said Francois Beyers, Câr-y-Môr Funding & Marketing Lead. “We’re driven by a desire to create a better future for our families, the environment, our community and generations to come.
“Our work is fuelled by genuine care—for people, for nature and for the legacy we, collectively, leave behind. Every decision we make comes from a place of empathy and a desire to do good.
“And that’s why we’re thrilled to partner with 1% for the Planet, who share in our commitment to make a difference.”
Câr-y-Môr’s impact areas as a partner of 1% for the Planet are:
Environmental Education – Our education programmes include school workshops, community learning sessions, and hands-on training for volunteers and career changers.
Marine Ecosystems – Our no-input shellfish and seaweed farm shows how working with nature can restore balance in coastal ecosystems.
Sustainable Livelihoods – We’re creating fulfilling roles that revive our local area and support growth with jobs and the infrastructure needed to make living in coastal and rural areas a viable and attractive option.
“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organisations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems,” said Yvon Chouinard, co-founder of 1% for the Planet.
10 ways Câr-y-Môr is putting planet and people before profit…
We are a Community Benefit Society
As a Community Benefit Society, we are owned by our members, an ever-growing network of people united by a vision to create environmental, economic and social benefits for Pembrokeshire and beyond. Our non-profit model ensures that, while we aim to make a profit, all earnings are reinvested into our business and community.
We use Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)
Câr-y-Môr uses Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) – growing seaweed and shellfish together in a way that mimics nature to promote ecosystem resilience and sustainable scale.
We meet the UN’s SDGs
Among the targets within each of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, there are a number which Câr-y-Môr meets thanks to its mission to advance and connect regenerative ocean and land farming practices – namely 3, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15.
We’re restoring biodiversity
By growing without chemicals or fertilisers on our sea farm, we’re helping marine life thrive while improving water quality and biodiversity. Local fishermen are now dropping their pots near our farm because the sea farms provide food and shelter for all marine life —a sign that a noninvasive approach creates benefits far beyond the farm itself.
We’re improving soil health
On land, our Welsh-grown seaweed biostimulants give farmers and gardeners a better way to grow. By enriching the soil and reducing reliance on chemical inputs, they’re producing healthier, more resilient crops while safeguarding the land for future generations.
We’re keeping seafood in the UK
Around 90% of all seafood that is caught or gathered from Welsh waters has been exported for several decades.
Working with local day fishermen and gatherers, Câr-y-Môr provides an alternative market for fishermen and gatherers - processing their catch and dispatching it - keeping Welsh seafood within the UK market.
We’re inspiring the next generation
Our education programmes include school workshops, community learning sessions, and hands-on training for volunteers and career changers. In 2024 alone, we reached more than 1,000 children with interactive lessons about regenerative sea farming.
We’re proving a model which can be replicated
Câr-y-Môr is proud to have played a small but important part in showing what’s possible. As the only established regenerative seaweed and shellfish farm in Wales with near-shore access and a processing facility (nearing completion)— we’ve learned a lot since 2019.
We have spent six years developing strong relationships and partnerships across the Welsh government, public and private stakeholders, international sea farms, land farmers, and most importantly, a tight-knit community of fisherman, gatherers, businesses and residents.
We’ve partnered with WWF Cymru
Our partnership with WWF Cymru continues to grow as we look for opportunities together to manage our Welsh seas in a way that provides us with “essential benefits and exciting opportunities for innovation and sustainable livelihoods” and offer the potential for emerging industries like ours that can support Wales on its journey to net zero.
We’re creating sustainable livelihoods
By farming in a way that gives back more than it takes, we're working to regenerate our seas and soil while building lasting livelihoods for coastal and rural communities.
We provide on-site training for team members and volunteers, strengthening local skills and employment opportunities. To date, we’ve employed 22 people in rural Wales, with more joining us all the time.
