Crowdfunding to support our coastal community and climate
Did you know that Câr-y-Môr is crowdfunding? We’re looking to raise £250k to support us in making our mission viable.
We’re a community business dedicated to restoring Welsh marine and soil ecosystems through regenerative sea and land farming, fishing, and gathering.
Working alongside local fishermen, farmers, and gatherers to grow seaweed and shellfish, produce sea‐inspired foods, and create natural soil boosters that support the land; we operate in a way that gives back more than it takes, regenerating our seas and soil while building lasting livelihoods for coastal and rural communities.
We want to show how a wholescape approach of regenerative sea and land farming, combined with local fishing and gathering, can create year-round jobs in coastal and rural communities, boost the Welsh economy, and enhance sea and soil health for future generations.
Our commitment is to build a viable, sustainable business and share our knowledge openly—helping anyone who wants to get started on their own regenerative journey.
We’ve had incredible success in just a few short years. But to ensure Câr-y-Môr’s viability long-term, we need to scale up.
And that’s where we need your help...
What is Crowdfunding?
A crowdfunder is a way of funding a particular project through large numbers of people, rather than traditional routes such as grants or loans.
It’s often used where there is a higher purpose for the money raised than just profit, or where traditional routes aren’t possible. Examples include the launch of a new business, charitable funding, or money for a good cause.
It’s an alternative finance method where you’re relying on a community (perhaps local to you, or simply anyone anywhere in the world online); to support your project with their own money.
Why is Câr-y-Môr Crowdfunding?
As you can probably imagine, farming the sea is expensive and it’s time consuming.
We’re confident that if we can scale Câr-y-Môr, we can make it a sustainable business model which delivers benefits to our coastal economy, community and environment.
Currently we have a 3 hectare site in the Ramsey Sound near St Davids; as well as two small trial sites. We’re also just a few weeks away from completing Sied-y-Môr, a new agricultural building which will house our shellfish and seaweed processing equipment, a shop, offices, and farm facilities - significantly expanding our capacity.
To grow our marine farm operations, boost production of seaweed and shellfish, and support the UK-wide, collective effort to reach net zero and nature recovery objectives; we need £250k to deliver our first phase…
What is Car-y-Mor’s Crowdfunder for?
We’re aiming to raise £250,000 to support three areas of our business:
1. Open a seaweed and shellfish hatchery and expand our facilities – Working with local organisations in Pembrokeshire, we’re looking to lease a disused RNLI station at St Justinians; where we envisage creating a seaweed hatchery, educational hub and improved amenities for boat launches (for both ourselves and the tour boat companies that operate from there).
2. Expansion of our seafood and biostimulant business – There is increasing pressure for the UK to reduce its reliance on imports, support British farmers, and look for sustainable solutions for homegrown and sourced food. All with an eye on hitting net zero targets.
3. Develop and deploy larger offshore sea farms – We must demonstrate that large-scale seaweed and shellfish farming and processing can be achieved successfully in Wales as it is in Ireland, Scotland and North America for real change to happen. This means expanding our operations with new, larger offshore farms and upgrading our current inshore sites.
